Introduction

B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital has a NextGen sequencing Laboratory that utilizes Next
GenerationSequencing (NGS) technology. This laboratory was inaugurated in June 2022 and aims to boost
research at the genomic level in various areas of medicine, according to a press release from the
hospital.

Advanced investigations such as DNA extraction for genomic analysis, molecular biology
markers are performed. A bio-repository is established for preservation of samples.

Ongoing Research

  • Circulating cell-free RNA as biomarker for early detection and monitoring progression of cancer
  • Circulating microRNAs as biomarker for detection and understanding of mechanism of pre-diabetes and
    its progression to diabetes

In Clinics

  • Molecular diagnosis and identification of pathogenic alterations in various cancers for accurate
diagnosis, identification of molecular subtypes for precision and targeted medicine
  • Identification of causative microorganism and microbial resistance for effective treatment in
high-risk infectious diseases like tuberculosis, pneumonia by culture-free shotgun metagenomic
    analysis
  • Pre-natal testing for chromosomal copy number alterations
