As part of student wellness, observational skill development, and environmental awareness initiatives, the Hornbill Nature Club organized an introductory lecture on **Bird Watching** for the MBBS 2025 batch. The activity aimed to familiarize medical students with nature observation and its relevance to clinical training, mental well-being, and public health awareness.
The session was conducted with the following objectives:
The session began with an interactive discussion highlighting the importance of observation in medical practice and how bird watching trains similar skills such as attention to detail, pattern recognition, and behavioural assessment.
Students were introduced to:
* Basics of bird watching and its ethics
* Essential equipment and beginner-friendly methods
* Five-step bird identification technique:
* Size
* Shape
* Colour pattern
* Behaviour
* Habitat
The speakers emphasized parallels between clinical diagnosis and bird identification, illustrating how careful observation can lead to accurate conclusions without immediate dependence on investigations.
The lecture also highlighted:
* Mental health benefits of nature exposure
* Role of birds as indicators of environmental and public health
* Importance of conservation awareness among future doctors
An overview of planned Hornbill Club activities including campus walks, field visits, and checklist documentation was presented.
The session was interactive, with students actively engaging in discussion and responding to observation-based questions. Many students expressed enthusiasm for participating in upcoming bird walks and nature-based activities.
The introduction lecture successfully sensitized students to:

* The importance of ecological awareness in healthcare

Students showed keen interest in joining the Hornbill Club and participating in regular bird watching sessions.
