School Health & Nutrition Assessment Study

Longitudinal study on anthropometry, body composition, and nutrition
awareness

Objective

  1. Enrollment age 3 to 18 years of age
  2. To assess anthropometry and body composition (using Bio Impedance analyzer) annually
  3. Dietary assessment, health and nutrition awareness sessions
  4. Sessions on ergonomics and physical fitness

Measurements will be repeated annually

Methodology

Study Design

Longitudinal

Anthropometry

Weight by electronic weighing scale, height by stadiometer, circumference using seca tape.

Body Composition

Body composition is assessed using bioelectrical impedance using MC-780 analyser (TANITA,
Japan).

Dietary Assessment

Dietary diversity and nutritional intake estimated using 24 hour recall.

Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Students studying at SVJCT school and junior college

Exclusion Criteria

  • Students who are physically unfit
  • Students who are not willing (parents refusal (for children<18 years) or child’s
    refusal despite parental consent)

Measurements

Anthropometry

Weight and standing height, circumferences (Head, Mid arm, Waist and Hip)

Body Composition

Body fat % using bioimpedance analyzer (TANITA, Japan)

About nutrition, physical fitness and normal ergonomics

Outcomes

  • Prevalence of obesity (excess BMI) and adiposity (excess body fat) & under nutrition
  • Dietary diversity
  • Normal ergonomics
  • Counseling sessions – nutritional awareness

Budget

There will not be cost incurred as staff and infrastructure needed for the study already in
place.
