The Konkan region is well-known for snakebites and scorpion stings. Many patients lose their lives when treated with some local ‘medicine’ or by so-called ‘sorcerers’. The Hospital conducted in-depth research on this and has developed a special treatment for such bites and stings. A scorpion sting affects the functioning of the heart, putting the patient’s life at risk. It was first documented on 2D Echo and coronary angiography at this Hospital. The Hospital has also developed a cure for this and continues to save many lives. Various research articles on this cure have been published in international journals. Mortality due to scorpion sting is high in rural India as preference is given to traditional healers above hospitalisation. In rural Indian settings where there is a lack of diagnostic facilities Electrocardiogram (ECG) was supposed to be the only test to diagnose cardiotoxicity. However, we proposed to study Echocardiography (ECHO) serially in scorpion sting cases for classifying them into mild, moderate and severe envenomation. Research findings and scientific publications from our landmark study Retrospective Analysis of Cardiotoxic Scorpion Envenomation in Konkan Region of Western India with Special Reference to Echocardiography
